Spinodal decomposition and coarsening fronts in the Cahn-Hilliard equation

چکیده
We study spinodal decomposition and coarsening when initiated by localized disturbances in the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Spatio-temporal dynamics are governed by multi-stage invasion fronts. The first front invades a spinodal unstable equilibrium and creates a spatially periodic unstable pattern. Secondary fronts invade this unstable pattern and create a coarser pattern in the wake. We give linear predictions for speeds and wavenumbers in this process and show existence of corresponding nonlinear fronts. The existence proof is based on Conley index theory, a priori estimates, and Galerkin approximations. We also compare our results and predictions with direct numerical simulations and report on some interesting bifurcations. Running head: Spinodal decomposition and coarsening fronts

Cascades of Spinodal Decompositions in the Ternary Cahn-hilliard Equations
The dynamics of the Cahn-Hilliard equations for a ternary alloy are studied during the phase separation process. The results show a primary spinodal decomposition followed by coarsening and then possibly a secondary spinodal decomposition.
متن کاملDoes coarsening begin during the initial stages of spinodal decomposition?
The initial stages of spinodal decomposition were studied by subjecting a critical blend of model polyolefins to a pressure quench and monitoring the evolution by time-resolved small angle neutron scattering. Contrary to the predictions of the widely accepted Cahn-Hilliard-Cook theory, we demonstrate that coarsening of the phase-separated structure begins immediately after the quench and occurs...
متن کاملSpinodal Decomposition for the Cahn-hilliard Equation
The Cahn-Hilliard equation is a fourth-order parabolic partial differential equation that is one of the leading models for the study of phase separation in isothermal, isotropic, binary mixtures, such as molten alloys. When a spatially homogeneous alloy is rapidly quenched in a physical experiment, a fine-grained decomposition into two distinct phases is frequently observed; this phenomenon is ...
متن کاملGeneralized Cahn-hilliard Equations Based on a Microforce Balance
The Cahn-Hilliard equation is very important in materials science. It is a conservation law which describes important qualitative behaviors of two-phase systems, namely, the phase separation process in a binary alloy. This phenomenon can be observed, for instance, when the alloy is cooled down sufficiently. One then observes a partial nucleation (i.e., the apparition of nucleides in the materia...
متن کاملEvolution of Pattern Complexity in the Cahn-Hilliard Theory of Phase Separation
Phase separation processes in compound materials can produce intriguing and complicated patterns. Yet, characterizing the geometry of these patterns quantitatively can be quite challenging. In this paper we use computational algebraic topology to obtain such a characterization. Our method is illustrated for the complex microstructures observed during spinodal decomposition and early coarsening ...
